If the box says not to use on light brown hair, do not go there. You will probably end up with severely damaged hair, orange-yellow stripes of different shades of up. Retouching root should be made by a colorist with experience.
If you can not afford a hairdresser, why not try modeling nights in furnished rooms or in schools or training centers.
